As you embark on your MBA journey, you will find that your instructors will leverage Canvas, our Learning Management System, to share files, receive assignment submissions, and send messages to your class.

Your Canvas Dashboard

When you first log into Canvas, you will be taken to your Dashboard. The Dashboard is your landing page in Canvas. Depending on your institution, your Dashboard may default to one of three views: Card View, List View, or Recent Activity View.

Card View: displays course cards for quick access to all your favorite courses. This is the default view at CBS.
List View: displays all course to-do items in an agenda view
Recent Activity View: displays all recent activity for all courses

To change your Dashboard view, click the Options menu and select your preferred viewing option. We recommend using the Card View or List view.

Card View Dashboard

The Card View Dashboard displays course cards for all your favorite active courses. The Card View Dashboard also includes the Dashboard sidebar, which includes items in your To-Do list and includes a link to the global Grades page.

[2] Each card can include up to four tabs, which represent the four main Canvas features for student course activity: Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, and Files.

[3] An unread icon on the Discussions or Announcements tab indicates that there is a new discussion or announcement in the course.

[1] The To Do section shows up to seven items with due dates or event dates in the upcoming weeks, including ungraded quizzes, assignments that do not require a Canvas submission, and course announcements. Each item in the To Do list displays the assignment name, the course name, the number of points, and the due date for the assignment. Once the due date has passed, items remain in this section for four weeks.

[2] The Recent Feedback section shows assignments with feedback from your instructor during the last four weeks.

[3] The View Grades button links to the Dashboard Grades page and displays grades for all active courses.

List View Dashboard

The List view displays all current courses in an agenda view. The Dashboard loads to display the current date, though previous and future dates can be viewed by scrolling up and down the page. When multiple courses display for a single date, courses are organized by course number, followed by the due date and due time. Each item on the list includes a link for easy access to the To Do item.

To Do list

The items displayed on the List View also include an icon that represents the item type:

	This icon represents calendar events. In the Core, every class session has a corresponding calendar event to allow you to block time from your schedule. Calendar events generally include which topics/readings students should prepare for the class session.
	This icon represents “Assignments;” that is, class graded deliverables where you have to submit something for the class. When you click on the entry, you will be taken to the assignment page, where you’ll find out more about the submission criteria. Generally, the submission will be through Canvas, but this is not always the case. Graded items include the point value and due date. Once a graded item is past the due date, the item displays a label according to the item’s status.
	This icon represents a sub-type of Assignments: Quizzes/Surveys. Some quizzes / surveys may have a time limit, and require internet connection to complete, which is why they’re marked differently. It is important to read the instructions for this type of assignment before starting them. Please note that ungraded surveys do not appear on the To Do List. Graded items include the point value and due date. Once a graded item is past the due date, the item displays a label according to the item’s status.
	This icon represents Announcements. Announcements not only go to your email, but are publicly archived in your course’s Announcement menu. Announcements always display in the List view display according to their posted date.

It is important to note that it is at the instructor’s discretion to determine when assignments will become available for student view. That said, all new activity is indicated in the List view, and items with new activity are indicated by a dot next to the item. New activity can include updates such as new replies to discussions, new grades for submissions, or new submission comments. New activity on a prior date can be viewed by scrolling up the Dashboard.

Completed Items
When an item in the list is marked as completed, all previous items remain in the list. Graded items are marked as completed when they are submitted. Non-graded items must be manually marked as completed by the student and are updated when the page is refreshed. Information about the completed item can be viewed by clicking the item. If multiple items are completed, they will be grouped together.
