This week we will begin to use Venkat's methods to analyze contemporary architecture. The assignment this week is to complete Peter Thiel's 2x2 with examples taken from the most recent Venice Biennale of Architecture, Oslo Architecture Triennale, and Istanbul Design Biennale (opening later this month). Plot at least 30 firms, projects, and/or people that have been related to any of these three events using the Illustrator file I've prepared (it's called 2x2_Thiel_PF.ai in the Files section of this platform). Please preserve the layers and graphic logic of the diagram so we can later compile them as a class.
begin by assigning labels to each of the 4 quadrants to illustrate your interpretation by subscribing to one of the 4 options in Venkat's classification system of approaches: storyteller, archetypist, metaphysician, metaphorist.
Add your name to the bottom left and your approach (storyteller, ...)
scour the websites and catalogs, online reviews, etc., of these three biennale/triennale events to find the firms/projects/people you are familiar with or interested to research further and add them to your 2x2 in the relative position you think they occupy (eg. further to the right for more optimistic, etc.) with the red stars and labels
determine the 4 canonical examples that you think most exemplify the quadrant as you are interpreting it and select 1 representative image for each
email your 4 canonical images and your 2x2 to Troy (tct2003) before 9pm on Wednesday, October 12.
bring a large plot (36" wide) of your 2x2 so that the examples are large enough to read (you can assemble many 11x17" sheets if that's preferable to plotting) that you will pin up and use to present if called upon
be prepared to give a 3 minute presentation on your 2x2 focusing on your approach, your quadrant labels, and your 4 canonical examples
Can't change a rubric once you've started using it.
